If you know who is leading the NHL in rookie scoring without looking at the league’s stats package, go directly to the head of the class and collect your gold star. Would you believe it’s Matias Maccelli of the Arizona Coyotes? Would you believe that he’s also the only NHL freshman who has hit double digits in the points column?
Even then, Maccelli has just one goal. Shane Pinto of the Ottawa Senators is the polar opposite, leading all rookies with eight goals, but with only one assist. There have been some pretty impressive rookie performances so far this season. Matty Beniers of the Seattle Kraken has been very good at both ends of the ice. Jake Sanderson of the Senators has been a consistent on an inconsistent team, Kaiden Guhle of the Montreal Canadiens is taking on a lot of heavy lifting and Owen Power of the Buffalo Sabres is playing almost 24 minutes a game. For a group that was expected to be dynamic, nobody has really pulled away from the pack.
