Metropolitan Division Preview: Hurricane warning
Carolina enters the season as a very serious Stanley Cup contender, but there are a couple of up-and-comers to consider, any maybe, just maybe, a familiar face
In the salary cap era, only one division in the NHL has produced three consecutive Stanley Cup winners – the Metropolitan with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and ’17 and the Washington Capitals in 2018. The days of those two teams being serious Cup contenders has, a miracle season from either of them notwithstanding, almost certainly passed. But that doesn’t mean the Metro won’t produce the next Cup winner because the Carolina Hurricanes are that good. And it’s a division that also has a couple of up-and-coming contenders that could surprise.
