Hockey Canada officials have some explaining to do
Will testimony before Canadian Heritage standing committee be a day of reckoning for Hockey Canada or will it be an exercise in stonewalling?
There’s a lot of must-watch hockey viewing happening Monday. First, the Colorado Avalanche have the chance to gain an almost-insurmountable stranglehold on the Stanley Cup final if they can win Game 3 in Tampa. The first Memorial Cup tournament since 2019 gets underway in Saint John, N.B., when the Hamilton Bulldogs take on the host Saint John Ice Dogs in the opening game of the 10-day tournament. The Edmonton Oilers are poised to put the finishing touches on a three-year contract extension for Jay Woodcroft, who helped salvage their season after he replaced Dave Tippett in February. Peter DeBoer could be named the next coach of the Dallas Stars.
Those are all really cool things. But when it comes to what really matters, anyone who cares about this game and the culture that surrounds it might want to spend three hours in the afternoon watching the testimony of Hockey Canada officials in front of the Canadian Heritage standing committee regarding the out-of-court settlement of a lawsuit filed by a woman who alleged she was sexually assaulted by eight Canadian Hockey League players, including members of the 2018 Canadian World Junior team at a Hockey Canada event in London, Ont., in 2018. The event is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time and can be seen by clicking on this link: https://www.ourcommons.ca/Committees/en/CHPC/StudyActivity?studyActivityId=11764784.
