Gary Bettman: 'This was horrible, this was horrific, this was unacceptable'
Finally, someone is going to investigate the alleged gang rape in 2018 by a group of junior hockey players properly. And that someone is the NHL
MONTREAL – The NHL has a new senior vice-president of security and his name is Jared Maples. Most recently, he was director of homeland for the State of New Jersey. “The rest of his resume, you can’t put on paper,” said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. “He has a very interesting and diverse background in the security field.”
A move like that normally wouldn’t generate much in the way of headlines, since it’s a fairly anonymous job. Maples’ predecessor, Dennis Cunningham, was a large, cordial man with a calm demeanor who often stood in the background, but there was little doubt that he would be able to break a person’s neck in record time if anyone associated with the NHL were ever in danger under his watch. But the appointment of Maples, combined with Bettman’s desire to get to the bottom of things, should make anyone who was involved in the alleged gang rape after a Hockey Canada Foundation event in 2018 nervous.
