Don't blame the Kraken for how Shane Wright is being handled
The agreement between the NHL and the Canadian Hockey League pretty much forces teams to deal with young players the way the Kraken are dealing with Wright
If you’re looking at the Shane Wright situation with the Seattle Kraken and thinking it exposes a flaw in the agreement between the NHL and the Canadian Hockey League that they might want to fix, well, that would be a pretty reasonable thing to think. After all, playing sparingly in only 11 of 18 games in the NHL, then being sent to the American Hockey League for two weeks doesn’t exactly scream great development.
But there, dear reader, is where you would be wrong. Because this is not about Shane Wright’s development, or the development of any other player in his position. One writer Tweeted earlier today with a suggestion of how the NHL and CHL could “avoid another Shane Wright situation.” The only problem with that is there is no appetite, either on the part of the NHL or CHL, to “avoid” this kind of situation. This has all been done by design.
