Abuse victim on Hockey Canada: 'They were awful'
Greg Gilhooly reached an out-of-court settlement initiated by Hockey Canada more than a decade ago. Based on his experience, he's not surprised the organization is in trouble again.
If Hockey Canada deals with all its sexual assault victims the way it did with Greg Gilhooly, it’s no wonder the governing body for amateur hockey in Canada continues to fumble and bumble its way through these quagmires. And it also appears to have learned nothing since dealing with Gilhooly, who was a victim of serial sexual abuser Graham James, nor does it appear to want to learn anything.
It was back in 2011 when Gilhooly received a call out of the blue from Hockey Canada’s senior vice-president of insurance and risk management, Glen McCurdie, which Gilhooly found strange since he had not initiated a lawsuit against Hockey Canada, nor did he have any intention of doing so. But there was McCurdie offering him an out-of-court settlement for his ordeal with James and all he had to do to be compensated was sign a non-disclosure agreement that prevented him only from disclosing the amount of money he was receiving from Hockey Canada.
